PoE also had this issue of throwing in flavor text in the middle of convos that broke up the flow, especially when it was voiced, but Deadfire doesn't do that. That it is all VO'd helps a ton, but it's delivered in much smaller chunks than PoE. Dialogue in Deadfire is a lot more punchy in how it's written and the way that it is presented is a lot more accommodating too. Another thing of note is that PoE was extremely verbose, often far too much for most people's liking. Again Combat overall is vastly improved, refined and streamlined while providing a great deal more options. There is a great deal more freedom to where you can go, what you can do and when in Deadfire that wasn't available in PoE. PoE was very linear, while Deadfire is much more open world-ish.

  • Neketaka is one of the best and most beautiful cities in any RPG.Ĭlick to shrink.Deadfire does a great many things that might make it worthwhile compared to PoE.
  • It's the ugly gap between the strong faction writing and the weak main plot that makes Deadfire hard to recommend to people who mostly want a good story. If the writers had focused on the political conflict among the factions as the main plot of the game (it is, in the end, like 80% of the player's engagement in the setting), Deadfire would probably get positive notices for its story.

  • The colonial archipelago setting is novel and well-realized through the various factions and the visual design of Neketaka.
  • It's an enormous credit to Deadfire's QOL tools (chiefly the speed slider and AI scripting) and UI designers that after a few hours I can play Deadfire's (fairly complex) combat as comfortably as I can an old Final Fantasy game's. And I say that as someone who has a strong preference for TB over RTwP.
  • The combat system deserves mention among the best in the genre.

These are the kind of items where an experienced player can say (due to Deadfire's open structure), "I'm going to bee-line to *that* item in a far-off pirate shop, and it's going to turn my PC into a walking hurricane."

  • As if hundreds of class/sub-class combinations weren't enough, Deadfire's truly unique magical items (as opposed to the randomized incremental upgrades you see in loot games or D:OS), with their own unique upgrade paths, further multiply the build possibilities.

It's the sort of game where you are always aching to try out one more build.

  • Multiclasses and subclasses are sufficiently intuitive that even non-theorycrafters can enjoy thinking up character concepts and putting them into practice.
  • I'll just be echoing everyone else's praise for the game, but to highlight a few things I love about Deadfire: I might write a love letter to that game as well some time.Ī post I made from the "Why women criticise sexualised character designs" thread showing off just some of the designs from the series, mostly Deadfire: Obsidian's other cRPG Tyranny is also very good at this. Pillars has an exceptionally diverse cast. Your companions like Pallegina, Maia and Xoti are just really great and interesting with awesome designs, Sagani and Maneha from the first game are just treasures, but elsewhere in the world from the top of the food chain to the very bottom there are women and POC.

The series is chock full of women and POC all over the place, which is especially prevalent and evident in Deadfire as EVERY SINGLE NPC who speaks has a custom portrait on top of VO, which really goes a long way in the experience as a whole, but also just presenting a much more diverse and mixed cast.
